Acknowledgments

The Science Writer, in its new incarnation, is the work of dedicated alumni, faculty, and of course the student authors.

Many thanks to faculty advisors Melissa Hendricks Joyce and Sam Apple for their support. Every story in the Uncharted issue originated in Sam’s fall 2021 course about online magazines; all fifteen authors were students in that class. The editorial board worked closely with Sam to align our production calendar to his syllabus, and several of the editorial board members appeared as guest speakers in Sam’s class. Melissa provided web hosting for the magazine, much-appreciated guidance, and the guiding vision for the magazine as a place to showcase student work.

Our words team was ably led by our managing editor, Catherine Evans. Our senior editors, Bushraa Khatib and Armi Rowe, were responsible for developmental edits, working many hours with our student authors on iterative revisions. Our copy editors, Colin O’Connor and Hannah Knighton, also conducted fact-checking, safeguarding the quality and integrity of every story.

Our design team was the brainchild of our deputy editor and chief technology officer, Saheel Mehta. Saheel led a team of four people responsible for the look and feel of the magazine as well as its public face. Saheel led the design team, which included Tara Holley, our art and multimedia editor. Tara created a dazzling number of original images to complement the stories, as well as our logo and the Uncharted theme image. Carly Britton, our director of audience engagement, is responsible for a plethora of social media feeds as well as a newsletter promoting the magazine. Anne Connor, wearing a second hat, rounded out the design team as layout editor, supported by input from the entire design team.

In her role as managing editor, Catherine Evans provided clear guidance on tasks and timelines, developing an Asana workspace to help keep each story’s progress on track. She pitched in frequently to assist with editing and worked with Sam Apple to keep the magazine’s schedule coordinated with his course syllabus.

In his role as deputy editor, Saheel Mehta provided invaluable structure for the magazine’s work, from researching digital asset management principles to offering more efficient ways of developing and accessing documents.

Thank you to our student authors for their patience and willingness to reimagine their work as we worked together to polish each piece to a high shine. The authors in the Uncharted issue include those for whom this is their first publication and those who have already been published in prestigious national magazines and newspapers.

In addition to the work of the nine-person editorial board, I appreciate the ad hoc contributions of other alumni, including Thalia Patrinos, who contributed the stunning collage that illustrates Hanna Webster’s essay. Bill Gourgey provided advice on technical aspects of the website and helped to connect us with Tara Holley.

In the words of an African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Yet we did both. Each person named above not only worked at an astonishing pace to meet deadlines, but worked beautifully in concert. It’s not often that I have been involved with a project that yielded this much quality in this short a time. This issue did, indeed, go far.
