The Science Writer highlights the talents of students in the Johns Hopkins University M.A. in Science Writing Program, supported by the editorial skills of alumni. The focus is on work designed for a magazine format, including news, feature stories, opinion pieces, and essays. With a different theme for each issue, The Science Writer explores science-related topics and exciting discoveries. Our stories exemplify the journalistic integrity and craft used by science writers to engage audiences and inspire insights.

The magazine’s inaugural issue, published in summer 2021, was written, edited, and designed by students. Beginning with the fall 2021 issue, The Science Writer is edited and produced by an editorial board of alumni of the Johns Hopkins Science Writing Program, showcasing work by current students.

The Science Writer is fully committed to promoting practices that support diversity and inclusion in science writing and publishing. The Science Writer recognizes, respects, and celebrates the many dimensions of diversity, including sex, gender, marital status, pregnancy, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and veteran status. Specifically, we aim to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion within our internal practices and in published content, embody these values in all our editorial activities, and support and promote these values in the science writing community.
